in
huge makeup giveaway

Hello friends! About this time last year I launched my YouTube channel. Since then I have grown my subscriber base and my skills at creating videos! I couldn't think of a better way to celebrate than by hosting a big giveaway!
Now, I know you are all here for the giveaway. I get it, I love free makeup as much as the next person-- one of my quotes at Gen Beauty was "no makeup left behind!" But before I get on to the details of the giveaway I just wanted to share a few thoughts I have on blogging and YouTube, and a few tips I have if you are looking to create your own channel.

People say that blogging will die out in favour of YouTube. I don't believe this to be true. I think there is room for both. So long as drugstores have shotty testers, there will be a girl standing in the makeup isle frantically googling for a swatch of the lipstick she is interested in. She doesn't want to watch a video. She wants a quick image. That search traffic is here to stay. But that came consumer may have been watching a few YouTube videos the night before getting her interested in the product in the first place. There will always be people who want to procrastinate at work with a quick and fun post to read. They can't watch a full video. And more than that, there will always be some people who would just rather read than watch.

For me, I find YouTube is an easier mode of communication when it comes to bigger ideas. I have always been a better talker than writer, though I am a pretty decent writer if I do say so myself. I roughly divide my content with straight up reviews on my blog, and tutorials and hauls and such on my YouTube. I find it works for me.

I try my best to put up two videos and three blog posts per week. Sometimes more. Often times less. Life happens. I balance that by filming the two videos at the same time. Often it starts with a tutorial (to do my makeup!) and then follows up with a haul or other type of roundup post.

If you are looking to branch out from blogging to include YouTube you have the advantage of being able to bring your PR products over with you.You also probably have most of the equipment that you need and a good idea of what to do. I had to buy a new DSLR (I use the Canon Rebel t6i) but that was fine as I needed a new one anyways. The flip screen is a total life saver! You will also need a tripod. Don't worry about the lighting. Use a window until you are sure this is a hobby that you want to invest in.

No matter if you have a blog or not, YouTube is a whole new landscape. Editing videos gets better with time. Especially when you are starting out, less is more when it comes to special effects. Don't go for the flashiest transition or a bunch of background music. Keep the editing simple until you get more comfortable, and let your content speak for its self. Don't worry if it isn't perfect. Rome wasn't built in a day, and everybody starts somewhere. There will come a day that you look back on your old videos and you sort of cringe, and are mostly happy with how far you have come. Focus on being you. Your subscribers know when you aren't being yourself, and so do brands.

If you have any questions or want my advice on starting up you guys are always welcome to tweet @ me or send me a DM. I won't always be able to reply right away (full time jobs and being a content creator take up lots of my time, plus my cats) but I am always happy to chat.

NOW ON TO THE GIVEAWAY!!!!
