Earlier this week I was invited by the team at Vaughan Mills to attend their first ever Pink Shirt Day concert! For those of you who don't know what Pink Shirt Day is, back in 2007 in a grade 9 boy was being bullied at a high school in Nova Scotia for wearing a pink shirt. Two fellow students bought 50 pink shirts at a discount supplier and handed them out to students the following morning. And as the story goes, the bullies were never heard from again. And while this story is beautiful and heartwarming, we all know that bullying continues to be a problem for our youth.
On Wednesday February 22nd Vaughan Mills hosted their first ever Pink Shirt Day concert. This free concert included Ryland James, Megan DeAngelis and Juno nominated Tyler Shaw. Attended by mostly elementary aged students and their parents, it was clear from the energy in the room that this was exactly the kids idea of a great night. Many came decked out in pink, with more than enough energy to power the show. One particularly touching part of the show happened when a girl shouted out "I love you!" to Tyler Shaw (who was clearly the fan favourite of the night!!) and he said it back. I know that that may seem a little silly for girls my age, but you could tell it made the audience's night!

Another beautiful moment of the night happened during the Q & A with YouTuber Megan DeAngelis. The girls in the audience were so eager to ask questions. The beauty was in that these girls were asking big, deep questions such as how Megan dealt with bullies, rather than say which boy she was dating or what her favourite things were. The girls in the audience were eager to have big conversations-- not just to hear from their favourite singers.
Ryland James also had the girls moving along and enjoying the show! Once the show was over the girls swarmed the meet & greet line up.
Near Entrance 4A (Sport Check) you can pop into this bright pink storefront, snap a fun photo and leave a note on the wall. Plus, you can buy a cute "Kindness Never Goes Out Of Style" shirt!
So many notes of kindness
My only pink shirt at the moment! ^.^
I thought my boyfriend was not a bad photographer!
Princess Diana quotes never go out of style.
In the storefront you can check out the designs that some students made with the shirts. I love how fun and trendy this one is! #helloRoseGold!
Have you ever attended an event like this? Kindness never goes out of style, so if you have a story about how you stopped a bully I would love to hear it!
xoxo
I was invited to cover this event in exchange for a gift card. Opinions remain my own.
